About Centre |
It is realized that training at Bachelor's level is not enough to solve intricate and complex engineering problems being faced in the development and management of water resources. To solve water resources problems, a team of hydrologists, irrigation and drainage engineers, water resources managers, water resources engineers, geologists, economists, social scientists, agronomist, soil scientists and environmentalists is required. The basic training that an engineer receives during his initial degree is limited and cannot cope with the highly specialized and rapid technological advancement in the development and management of water resources. He cannot solve complex water resources problems with the knowledge of the elementary principles learnt in the basic degree programs. Realizing the above facts, the Government of Pakistan established the Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering (CEWRE) in 1976 as a semi-autonomous institution of higher learning under the control of Higher Education Commission and the Ministry of Education, Government of Pakistan. The Centre is academically affiliated with University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, which awards degrees to Centre’s graduates. |

The Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering started two M.Phill degree programs in 1979 in the fields of Hydrology (HYD) and Water Resources Management (WRM). A 3rd M.Phil degree program was started in 1994 in the discipline of Water Resources Engineering (WRE). The degree program in Hydrology was redesigned as Engineering Hydrology (EHY). In addition M.Sc. degree was initiated in the fields of Water Resources Management WRM, Engineering Hydrology EHY, and Water Resources Engineering WRE. The Centre offered a 4th postgraduate M.Sc. degree program in the discipline of Hydropower Engineering (HPE) in 2000. More than 350 students have so far successfully completed M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in different programs and presently 80 students are engaged either in course work or research thesis in the four degree programs of the Centre. The Centre’s graduates are highly demanding and are employed in national and international organization working in water sector. |

Laboratory and Research Facilities |
The Centre has several well equipped laboratories including Hydraulics, Hydrology, Irrigation and Drainage, Soil & Water Analysis, Remote Sensing & GIS and Computer. There is a well equipped distance learning conference room. In addition there is a large Model Tray Hall having facilities for analysis of physical and scale models of river and other water resources engineering structures e.g., dams, spillways, tunnels, etc. Research facilities also include electronics, machine shop and drafting services. Field equipment is available for geo-physical investigations, flow and sedimentation measurements, infiltration tests, sprinkler and drip irrigations, soil moisture monitoring and hydro-meteorological observations.

Library |
Library of the Centre has a very large collection of books and journals relating to water resources and allied fields. Apart from books, the library possesses proceedings of international seminars and conferences, publications of FAO & UN agencies and back files of thirty international journals relating to hydrology, hydraulic and water resources. Besides these, the Centre regularly subscribes about thirty such journals. The Centre also collects local project reports for reference by the students and researchers.

Academic Programs |
The Centre offers postgraduate programs leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in four disciplines namely Engineering Hydrology, Hydropower Engineering, Water Resources Engineering and Water Resources Management. M.Sc. degree comprises of course work and a research thesis. The students can enroll either full-time or part-time. Ph.D. program lays emphasis on research as well as courses

In-Service Training Programs |
To benefit the in-service engineers and scientists, this Centre frequently holds refresher courses and training workshops of 1-3 weeks duration. These short courses are usually arranged on some latest topic to impart training of specialized nature. To-date, the Centre has conducted more than 50 refresher courses and training workshops benefiting approximately 1500 (50 x 30) professionals. Mostly, the Centre takes initiative to conduct a particular training. Sometime, these programs are also arranged on special request of some other department or an organization such as Wapda, Irrigation departments and others.

Seminars and Conferences |
The Centre frequently organized national and international seminars, workshops and conferences. Proceedings of these events are published in collaboration with the sponsoring agencies and are available in the Library of the Centre. To-date the Centre has organized more than 25 such events. |
